It is being reported that the wife of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is being investigated by the FBI.
According to the news outlet Seven Days, Sanders’ wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, is under investigation for obtaining a loan in 2010 to purchase a piece of land owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington church for Burlington College, which she was the president of from 2004 to 2011. She has been accused of “inflating the number of fundraising commitments she had” in order to obtain the loan, as she had claimed that the college had $2.6 million in loans pledged; that number $676,000.
Burlington’s default resulted in the church losing “between $1.6 million and $2 million” since it “financed a portion of the sale.” Burlington itself officially shut down in May 2016 due to the massive amount of debt it was facing.
The FBI has been tight-lipped about the investigation, but Seven Days talked to people who had been involved with the college, including Carol Moore, the last president of the college, who told the publication that the FBI had asked her, “Was there any collusion between Jane Sanders and the bank? Did she falsify records in order to get the loan from the bank?”
